Marcel Mouly was born in Paris, France, in 1918. He was initially sent to art school as a punishment for mischievous behavior, but Mouly instead exhibited an extraordinary, innate artistic talent. At the age of 13, Mouly started working at various odd jobs and in 1935 while working for a wine merchant, he started going to art school at night at the French Academies in Montparnasse, until he began military duty in 1938. He soon befriended fellow artist Bernard la Fourcade and they soon established a studio in Auteuil. During a trip to Normandy, the two were stopped by German officials and because of lack of papers, upon their return to Paris, they were mistakenly imprisoned as spies. It was during his time in solitary confinement that Mouly decided that upon release he would dedicate himself to creative freedom and make a name for himself as an artist.

After his release from prison, Mouly and artist Edouart Pignon rented space from famed modernist sculptor Jacques Lipchitz. Mouly became Lipchitz' protégé and was inspired by the Cubist movement. Mouly's works were exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in Paris in 1945 and at the Salon du Mai the following year. His first one-man show was held in 1949 at the Libraire Bergamasque.  Mouly's powerful and expressive style is strongly influenced by Picasso's cubist works and Matisse's fauvist paintings. He has exhibited throughout the world and his paintings hang today in over 20 museums including; the Musee Nationale d'Art Moderne, Paris, the Musee Geneve, Museums of Modern Art in Japan and Helsinki. In addition, Mouly won the Chevalier de l'Orde des Arte et Lettres in 1957, and the Premier Prix de Lithographie in 1973.

Marcel Mouly died in 2008, just shy of his 90th birthday, but his legacy and love of art live on through his works. Art historian and writer Joseph Jacobs said, Mouly's "art is pure and direct in its message¿it is an art about beauty and life, an art roots firmly planted in the School of Paris, Picasso, Braque, Matisse, Roault, Vlaminck, Chagall, Vuillard and Dufy are his patrimony, and he has carried their mantel with unflagging dedication." At his death in 2008, he was the last living protégé of Picasso.
